The Jemsek Specialty Clinic is best known today for its pioneering and health-restoring work treating Lyme disease. That wasn’t always the case. Dr. Joseph G. Jemsek, the founder and namesake of the clinic, spent more than 20 years with the Nalle Clinic in Charlotte, N.C., where gained a reputation as one of the state’s leading infectious diseases specialists.
Dr. Jemsek diagnosed the first documented case of HIV/AIDS in Mecklenburg County, and likely all of North Carolina, and has been recognized with the state’s most prestigious civilian awards from two sitting governors for his groundbreaking work in the field of HIV/AIDS treatment and research: the Certificate of Appreciation, from Governor Jim Hunt, and the World AIDS Day Volunteer Service Award, from Governor Mike Easley.
In 2000, Dr. Jemsek started his own clinic with the goal of serving patients with HIV/AIDS. The facility grew into the region’s largest private HIV/AIDS clinic, serving thousands of patients from around the country in tandem with the clinic’s charity outreach through The Jemsek Project.
Over the last decade, Dr. Jemsek has turned his focus to the treatment of Lyme disease, and the same traits of passion and compassion that made him a forerunner in the field of HIV/AIDS is evident in his pioneering work with Lyme disease. At risk to his own professional career, Dr. Jemsek has diligently fought for patients’ rights to receive health-restoring medical care against a prevailing school of thought that has left thousands of patients marginalized, misdiagnosed, and suffering. From his clinic in Washington, D.C., Dr. Jemsek treats patients with Lyme disease who seek out his care from across the state, country and globe.
Dr. Jemsek continues to push for reform of a broken health care system, advocating for the delivery of medical care in America that is more progressive, focused, effective, and efficient. To that end, the Jemsek Specialty Clinic marked another exciting milestone in January 2010, when it opened its new facility in Washington, D.C., where Dr. Jemsek and his staff continue their mission of providing health-restoring care to patients.
